UPDATE: October 11, 2011: Last Tuesday, October 4th, we took a group of Chicago Public Schools students, faculty members, as well as members of The Healthy Schools Campaign and The Green Plate Club, to visit an apple orchard and packing facility in Sparta, Michigan. It was the first trip of its kind in CPS history. We decided that in order to help encourage healthy eating habits amongst our school children, a key step would be to allow them to experience just how their food arrives from farm-to-fork. It was a very successful trip, with the group having an interactive experience in the orchards and packing houses. They learned just how apples are picked, sorted, washed, packed, and even tested for firmness and sugar content. The group then picked their own apples right off the trees! The trip was such a success, we plan on expanding it next year to two trips. We will visit an Illinois farm, as well as a trip back to the apple orchards.
